“The Winged Watchman” is a wonderful book by the very talented chilren’s auther, Hilda Van Stockum. It is the story of a Dutch boy and his family during the last year of the Nazi occupation. It has the perfect amount of tension, humour, hardship and adventure that makes a great children’s novel. (It’s a very enjoyable read for adults as well.)
When the Dutch mother says to a Jewish woman who has survived a concentration camp, “You must hate the Germans”, the woman’s response is a challenge to us all.
I have never met a book by Hilda Van Stockum that I didn’t enjoy (I own seven of them) and this one is very special.
