Finding Winnie

Most of us have read the stories of the loveable “Winnie-the-Pooh” – “Finding Winnie” is the true story of this most famous bear, told by the great-granddaughter of the man who saw a bear cub at the train station and bought him off a trapper. This man, Harry Colebourn, was a veterinarian in Winnipeg and was off to the First World War to take care of army horses, when he saw the cub. He bought him, and named him “Winnipeg” or “Winnie” for short, so that they would “never be far from home.” Winnie actually ended up going overseas with the troops, and eventually ended up in a zoo in London, where a boy named Christopher Robin Milne used to play with him while his father, Alan Alexander Milne, watched, and eventually wrote the Winnie-the-pooh books.

As a bonus, there are photographs in the back including a photo of a page of the diary the day Harry found Winnie on August 24, 1914 that says, “Bought bear $20.” There is also a photo of Christopher Robin with Winnie at the zoo.

This is a delightful read for anyone who has read the Winnie-the-pooh books.
