“Farmhouse” is a new book by the award winning author, Sophie Blackall. It’s a story told in delightful rhyme about a farmhouse in which lived a large family. The story of the farmhouse continues after all the children in the family grow up and move away, leaving the house empty. With the people gone, it is discovered by various creatures who make their home in it, until eventually the author discovers it.
The author did discover this very farmhouse, and did research to find out who had lived there, and what their lives were like. She even managed to track down descendants of the original occupants.
The illustrations were created not only with Chinese ink, watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil, but with all kinds of items that the author-artist found in the farmhouse, including wallpaper, newspaper, clothing, handkerchiefs and more.
All this is explained at the end of the book, after the story. Truly a delightful book that I will read and re-read to my grandchildren for years.
