God’s path for your children

I have homeschooled all ten of our children. The youngest has recently graduated from our homeschool and doesn’t yet know what he is going to pursue. A mentor of his was encouraging him to just apply for university, but I told him that as this mentor hasn’t been homeschooled, he doesn’t know that there are different paths to get to where one needs to be.

We homeschoolers have seen that our children don’t have to follow the high school/university/job path –  God has so many ways to get our offspring to where they should be. In fact, six of our children haven’t been to a day of institutional school in their lives, and two of these own successful businesses, others have been in full-time ministry, one has had a successful career. While one of our offspring did go straight from high school to university, the three others who pursued formal higher education, didn’t pursue it immediately after high school but took one, two, or four years doing other things first.

God has different paths for your children. Keep your eyes and ears open as to their strengths, giftings, and interests (which can change over the years). Pray for them and with them that God would guide them. Keep the pressure off of your high schoolers to have to know what they want to do when they are finished high school. If they don’t know what they want to do, that’s okay, although they shouldn’t just sit around playing video games – they can get a job or volunteer or do something else constructive, as they seek God for the next step to their particular path. God is good, and He’s got this!
