Restoring My Soul

Do you ever feel weary in your soul? I am very, very blessed in my family and daily life, but the world around me can be a lot. Everyone has different ways in which the world around them is “a lot.” And for some it’s not just the world around them, but their daily lives as well.

There are things, however, that restore my soul. I like that phrase. It’s found in the very well-known Psalm (or “mizmor”) 23 – which is often recited at Jewish and Christian funerals: “He leads me beside still waters, He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:2 ESV). Being by peaceful water restores my soul.

Other things restore my soul as well and a lot of them have to do with God’s creation. It’s interesting that even among those who don’t share my faith in God, I hear things like “touch grass” or “get in nature.” Many agree that planting things, working with the earth is therapeutic (i.e. “restores one’s soul”).

For me, enjoying God’s creation is connected to enjoying the Creator. When I am surrounded by the beauty He made, my heart swells in praise and that restores my soul.

A word of encouragement: take the time to let your soul be restored.
