I am different. So are you. We know that scientifically speaking, each individual has a different DNA and fingerprints, but beyond that we know that our personalities, our gifts, and natural abilities are unique as well.
Why then do we have such a strong desire NOT to be different but to be like others? I believe that part of that is because as human beings, we are made for family and community. We need others – this is normal and healthy. We get our clues from those around us – how we talk, how we dress, what we laugh at.
I recently read about when the Israelites wanted a king. Up until then they didn’t have a king, but they wanted one. The prophet-judge Samuel warned them about what their lives would be like with a king, but they responded with: “No! But there shall be a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations.”
“That we also may be like all the nations“? – Big red flag here: since when were they supposed to be like all the nations? In fact, they were specifically NOT supposed to be like all the idol-worshiping, child-sacrificing nations around them – they were to follow the one true God and live as He directed them to.
The same thing applies to us. As God’s people we are commanded to “be holy” – which means “separate.” The point is not to try and be different; that shouldn’t be our focus. Our focus should be to follow God, to love in a sacrificial way as He does, to be honest, selfless, patient, to answer insult with kindness. If we are indistinguishable by how we live – if we meld in with everyone else – there just might be a problem.
Again, the solution is not to try and be different – simply read God’s Word everyday and follow Him. Dare to be different.
