Please…Don’t Compare!

We all do it. We compare ourselves to others. Some may do it in many areas of life, some may do it less, but it seems we all do it. And it is harmful. It is harmful because we are all unique individuals with our own background, our own struggles, our own special gifts.

Comparing ourselves to others, therefore, is futile and can bring discouragement (if we perceive that they are better at something, more gifted, or have a better life) or bring pride (if we perceive that we are better than they at something, more gifted, etc.)

God has gifted us in different ways, and His Word says that “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

Use your gifts, and do the things which God would have you do.

Seeing as we each don’t each have all the gifts, we do need each other, and that is how God wants it. We need to be doing life in community. Sometimes that community is our family, sometimes it is neighbours, sometimes it is our congregation. The more people, the bigger the pool of gifts. But also, the greater the chances are of rubbing each other the wrong way or irritating each other. The person who is gifted in seeing the big picture might get frustrated with someone who is preoccupied with the details.

If someone is annoying to you, I suggest that you ask God to show you their gifts. This might help you appreciate them.

And in case you compare yourself to others and always think you are lacking, unaware of your gifts – ask God what your gifts are, what makes you unique and special…because you are!
